District 205’s Freshman Academies provide students the challenge and support they need to make a great start to their high school careers. In academy teams of students, with teams of teachers, students become part of a smaller learning community where they get to know one another and are not intimidated by the big high school environment. Teacher teams provide connections between subject areas to make the learning more meaningful. In addition, under the block schedule students will have fewer courses on which to focus at a given time, while having the chance to take more courses in the long run.
Freshman Academy teachers communicate often with parents, sending frequent progress reports. The Freshman Academy has allowed teachers to establish consistent, high expectations for student learning. Students in need of academic support in their coursework are scheduled into Year-long Algebra, Year-long English, SLP, Corrective Reading, Corrective Math, I Can Learn for algebra, and other tutorial services to help them succeed with the high school curriculum.
